English Level: Intermediate to Advanced.
In this course, students will learn how to use clues to guess meanings of words and expressions. Checking every word in a bilingual dictionary is time consuming and boring. It is better to use the same strategies as native speakers in guessing the meaning of new words, phrasal verbs and idioms. The course will help you understand words in context, phrasal verbs, idioms, buzz words, signal words, jargon and much more. This may be the course that will give you a new, more dynamic approach to understanding English.
Instructor: Frances Fister-Stoga is a linguist who speaks more than five languages and has taught in the U.S., Canada, Europe and Japan. She taught at the University of Tokyo for more than 15 years.

このクラスでは、単語や表現の意味を推測するためのきっかけをどのようにつかむかを学びます。単語をいちいち辞書で調べていては時間がかかるばかりでなく、退屈です。ほとんどのネイティブスピーカーがそうであるように、新しい言葉や慣用句等を推測しながら意味をつかみましょう。このクラスでは、文脈、イディオム、専門用語、特殊な用語などの言葉をより理解できるように指導します。また、英語を理解するための新しいダイナミックな手法を学ぶことでしょう。

5ヶ国語以上を話せる言語学者。アメリカ、カナダ、ヨーロッパ、日本などで教授経験がある。1992年より東京大学にて講師を務めている。
