The best way to improve listening comprehension is to improve pronunciation. How can you distinguish R and L, of r example, if you cannot say the sounds yourself? In this course, the instructor will cover groups of three, sometimes, two, vowel or consonant sounds each week. These sounds will be practiced intensely. From there the finer points of stress and intonation will be covered, followed by an extensive listening practice of weak forms of North American English, such as "gonna" and "wanna", in dialog form. The dialog form will be practiced out loud. The materials are the instructor's own. This class would make a very effective complement to the TOEIC class in the same afternoon.

Instructor: John Bockman is a full-time instructor in the English for Academic Purposes program at Lakeland College Japan. He holds an M.A. in ESL from the University of Arizona and has taught fluency drills off and on for about 20 years.

リスニング力を延ばすには発音の力をのばすのが一番です。例えば、RとLを区別して発音することができなければ、聞き分けることも難しいでしょう。講師は毎週2〜3の母音または子音について講義し、受講生はその音に関して集中的に練習することができます。 “gonna”や“wanna”などの北米でよく使われる省略形などに関しても、会話形式のリスニングをしながら集中的に学び、どこに強弱をつけながら発音するのかについても学びます。会話形式の練習では、はっきりと大きな声で話すように指導されます。教材は講師自身が作成したものを使用します。このクラスは同じく土曜日にあるTOEIC上達講座 (LOC/ENG 1土曜日　12:30-14:30)との補助として受講するとより効果的です。
