LOC/POP 1 • (Wednesdays 19:00 -- 21:00)

This course will provide a basis for understanding Japanese popular culture (anime, manga, videogames, J-pop, etc) in social, historic and cross-cultural context. Through the lens of popular culture and devoted fans, this class will examine issues in Japanese society both past and present. We will analyze pop-culture examples from different periods and discuss why and how they changed. In the process, we will note the increasing importance of the otaku subculture, and discuss the systems of knowledge production built up around technology and media. This is critical to comprehending the images and trends appearing in popular culture today.
